Crystals: Healing Properties

Crystals and semi precious stones are some of the most beautiful natural objects gracing our planet. Coming in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and compositions they represent the full spectrum of the rainbow and beyond! Today we are going to look at crystals, how they facilitate healing and balance as well as some simple ways you can bring their gifts into your life

How do crystals heal?

Crystal therapy and the energetic power of certain stones has been known for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians for example revered Lapis Lazuli. A beautiful blue stone flecked with gold it can be found on many examples of their jewelry and ornaments, indeed it is widely believed that the ancients used a lot of crystal technology, the details of this largely lost to us now. What we can safely presume is that crystals are powerful and when used correctly can enhance the vibration of those sensitive to them

All crystal types have slightly different compositions and make up. It is these differences in ‘ingredients’ and structure if you will, that dictate how we would use them but rest assured whatever it is that you wish for help with- crystal power can help.

How do I choose a crystal?

You are definitely spoiled for choice here! I would recommend one of two ways to do this and it comes down to what suits you best

Choosing a crystal online: This is perhaps best done by researching the area you want help with. Looking for protection and grounding? Try obsidian or black tourmaline, is it a happier lighter emotion you wish to feel? Blue lace agate and larimar can help.Physical ailments such as headaches can be alleviated with clear quartz and stomach cramps benefit from orange calcite.

Choosing a crystal in person:? Certainly, as above research what you want help with but also in person you may wish to feel the stones and assess how they respond to your touch and how your body responds to the crystal itself. If you can’t get to a crystal shop this is no problem at all. I buy pretty much all of mine online and have received the best helpful service from eshops. I tend to look at the pictures and go where I am guided, it is a great way to build on your intuition and allow your inner self to lead the way in terms of need and desire.

How to use crystals

There are so many ways I am sure to miss something here, but below you will find how I use crystals in my everyday life.

The simplest way and great for beginning, is to buy some simple small tumbled stones. You can leave these in prominent areas (by your bed, doorway, bathroom, kitchen etc) to increase the vibrational tone or energy of an area, hold them in your hand when meditating or trying to find the answer to something, thumb stones or palm stones are particularly useful for this as when you rub your fingers across the smooth texture you are really feeling into the resonance as well as self soothing.

Meditation is really enhanced with crystals. You can place them on an energetic centre of your body, most people choose the third eye, crown or solar plexus and focus on deep breathing and allowing the crystal to hone in on your bodies (physical and energetic) in order to assist you.

Over time you will begin to have your favourite stones and this is when perhaps wearing the stone is a good idea. Stud earrings, pendants, rings, brooches, bracelets are all created from many different stones of varying styles so there really is something for everybody, metaphysically functional and attractive too!

Figurines and ornaments are a great way to tune into your favourite stones too. Many people collect crystal skulls, slightly controversial depending upon intent, they can be used for scrying, powerful healing and possess an aura all of their own. You could also get a semi precious stone in the shape of a totem animal (a whole blog series is coming up on totem animals so stay tuned), to further increase the power of the stone and its direct relationship to you.

Crystal grids: This area deserves a post all of it’s own but let us have an introduction for now at least, to show you the way in which they work. Stones are chosen for specific intent and attributes and placed in a sacred geometric shape (for more on sacred geometry click HERE) after which they are programmed by the user. Once all of the crystals are in alignment we set our minds to meditating upon what we are trying to feel, manifest, heal. Next take a finger and touch each stone tracing an invisible line between them all. The combination of guided intent and metaphysical patterning is incredibly powerful here.

Cleansing and Charging Crystals

Crystals require care! They are like pets in that they need to be kept clean and looked after. When you first receive a stone there are many ways to clean it to ensure it is free of any undesirable residual energy and the most appropriate way will depend upon the type of crystal you have. Cleansing with salt (a sprinkling or submerging in a small bowl), submerging in spring water, leaving out in the sun or burying in good soil overnight are all excellent ways prepping them for their work. I would recommend you do this regularly depending upon how often you use them. You will perhaps notice that your gems may become cloudy or muddy looking over time which is a sign to get them cleaned.

It is also useful to charge or program your crystal with the power of intent. For this I would recommend sitting somewhere calm, quiet and peaceful. Hold your clean stones in your hands and close your eyes and breathe deeply. Now set your intent for the stones use. This can be an affirmation ‘I AM…..’ or you can also invoke your spirit guide or personal deity/guardian angel.

The Magic of Mudra

What are Mudras?

You will have undoubtedly seen them practiced many times in both religious pictures and sculptures potentially without even realising the significance of the gestures that are being performed. Gods and demi Gods such as Krisna and Hanuman, ascended masters like Buddha and even early christian leaders have been depicted practicing ancient manipulation and attunement into the energy fields all around us, elemental magic if you will. This very same magic and wisdom remain available to you right now if you wish to use them, so lets take a look at mudra magic: the meaning behind it and most importantly how you can use it in your daily spiritual and meditative practice.

The mudra is found within the sacred texts of Hatha yoga, a school of Hinduism concerned with force and physical movement or techniques for holistic wellness. Sanskrit for gesture or seal it translates as a ritualistic gesture, mostly performed by using our hands whilst in a meditative seated position, although there are mudras performed during dance and indeed internally involving varying organs and parts of the human body. Although mentioned specifically with the Hindu traditions we should also reiterate here that specific hand gestures employed during spiritual practice are also to be found in Buddhism, Christianity as well as by many people across the globe who perform these actions often without realising their powerful connotation and influence. This article however will be focusing upon hand mudras.

Our hands hold many energetic points within them. Palms for example are secondary chakra points from which to channel energy to and from the main chakras within and without the body, energy portals if you like. Fingers however have their own unique correspondences. Take your hand and put it out in front of you. Next count all of the digits on your hand. Most of you will have 5 and for those with a Wiccan leaning will hopefully immediately understand the importance of this number. Each of your fingers is aligned to one of the 5 elements as listed below:

  • Earth energy is represented by Prithvi the ring finger
  • Air energy is represented by Vayu the index finger
  • Fire energy is represented by Agni the thumb
  • Water energy is represented by Jal the little finger
  • Source/space energy is represented by Akash the middle finger

By holding these elements in certain positions we can manipulate the elements, often in conjunction with one another to induce beneficial states and seal them and free us from that which are not quite as good for our bodies minds and souls. There are a vast number of mudras all ranging in their ease and complexity. Below you will find a few mudras you can try for yourself. For heightened effectiveness it is recommended that mudras be practiced during meditation, sitting sit cross legged or in the lotus position and hold the mudra gesture for at least 15 minutes. Some of the below mudras can however be practiced discreetly at any point during the day as and when needed. So, lets take a look a look at some helpful mudra positions and tap into the magic of the elements!

How to practice a mudra

The four mudras listed below are a good place to start in terms of how easy they are to perform as well as the benefits you will feel after doing them.

Gyan Perhaps the most well known or recognised mudra. Gyan concerns itself with the gaining of factual knowledge and insight therefore is great when seeking clarity of a practical nature concerning a certain situation, memory improvement or when studying and assimilating new information. This is performed by touching the tip of the thumb to the tip of the index finger, bringing together fire and air.

Apana The theme here is cleansing, elimination and release. Again this is applied to the physical and metaphysical. In terms of our gall bladder, liver and the process of ingestion, metabolism and elimination performing this mudra will increase the efficacy of the body’s natural ability to process and release, also helping the immune system. As well as this however, the subtle energy body can also benefit by being cleansed of any negative or detrimental energy which may be stuck or has found a host! Those of you who have attended a thrash metal concert or two in their time will probably have performed this mudra as will any Aloha aficionados! Place the middle and ring finger together with the index and little finger splayed out to form a very crude Y shape. This is certainly one to perform to improve flow and reduce stagnation of any kind. This mudra brings together source, earth and fire. This mudra is perfect for those of us sensitive to picking up and retaining the energies of others and is easily performed outside of the meditation process.

Prithvi is our super strong all rounder in terms of healing. It draws its focus from the root chakra and the intensity of the earth element coupled with fire. Naturally as we encompass the earth element we also have the added bonus of increasing our natural strength and sturdiness which is called upon during times of stress and exertion. Capable of combating fatigue, weight loss and burning often felt within the body during times of stress as well as the ability to strengthen our minds, security and self belief during these trying times. Although simple, it is highly effective and certainly one which naturally speaks to me and which I incorporate into my practice. Place the ring finger nail bed against the inside of the top of the thumb with all other fingers raised yet relaxed.

Prana, we could argue, is our truly magical mudra! Prana is sanskrit for vital life force, it is the very essence of all living things also known in ancient oriental philosophy as Chi. It is the sacred breathe of life and energy found in all matter here on earth. Imagine it as an invisible network connecting all life and indeed all things. Not only can it activate dormant energy inside of you but also creates a pool of energy to pull on as needed. Prana mudra will assist greatly in strengthening the mind and body improving vitality, confidence and social ability as it enhances our connection with prana and all that is. I personally keep this one devoted to my meditation practice. In order to perform the prana mudra bring together the ring and little finger with the inside of the thumb, keeping your other two fingers straight yet relaxed. This integrates the elements of fire, earth and water.

There are not only many many more uses for these particular mudras but also even more mudras to explore. Take your time and try out those which naturally appeal to you or alternatively research which mudra(s) will best help you with certain situations and conditions you wish assistance with. If you employ your chosen mudra consistently and for an appropriate length of time I am sure you will see the the benefit and reap the rewards just as I have.

Positive Ways to Release Anger


When it’s Time to Stop and Release

We all have a vision.

Those of us reading these words right now are in touch with or at the very least aware of a need inside of themselves to grow spiritually, to connect with their higher self and live in God, our Higher Selves, the Vortex, Brahma -whatever you personally wish to call it. Through our practices and prayer we are learning to intuit our next step on our paths, translating our experience, feelings and thought in order to expand our awareness and our soul purpose.

Every thought feeling and event is here to teach support and guide us. From an early age we have learned to label these as good or bad, happy or sad so on and so forth. Where we can have a little difficulty translating and evolving is during those times when it can feel as though what we are doing and what we are trying to achieve is at odds with our external and internal environment. The bad and the sad. What we need to realise is that what we have done is place our happiness and power on external conditions. I am happy WHEN. We have managed to strip ourselves of the power of feeling good by pegging it to events outside of our control. Spirituality and depression can go hand in hand.

When we feel we are kicked out of our flow it can be incredibly hard to get back into it again- like swimming against the tide. Frustrated when we are not able to be ourselves it is as though we have a grey cloud over our heads or the air just feels too damn bloody heavy. It is easy to be overcome with feelings such as anxiety, indecision, lethargy, irritability and even illness. If we let it, this can also lead to a crisis in faith. We see ourselves performing the same actions we wish to no longer be a part of our lives and get frustrated. We can see our spiritual search as a chore. A once exciting decision fills us with sadness and pressure, our energy can be low and janky as if we are letting ourselves and the divine down, if you are susceptible to energy shifts leaving you drained and depleted this too can take a toll and be felt even more than would be normally as can the energy of people around you.

Don’t give up though.

Don’t give up because this is actually some of the most powerful and progressive learning we can work through. The fact that you are admitting this situation an airing and not denying the difficulty you are having is proof that you are growing. You are living your truth by looking at it and attempting to find a resolution to it so Let’s take a look at some healthy anger release and work through the

What we want to say is that you should be congratulating yourself right now. You have developed your self awareness and internal spiritual compass to the point that you are so aware of your space and energy and whether life is working in your favour, the way you want it to, that you are able to tell yourself very loudly and very clearly that something is not quite right! That something is in need of a little tweak in order to get you pointing due North again.

A state of receivership

This is one in which you are allowing a connection and allowing progress on your path. You may well be screaming at us right now ‘But I am in a state of receivership! Look, I’m meditating and everything, doing my affirmations reading my books, wishing, praying and being a really good person’. Mmmmh, not so much if you are feeling as though every move and breathe is conspiring against you. Not so much.

During my time working with an integrative practice of personal spirituality, NLP and trauma aware mindfulness I have learned that when we are totally out of synch a lot of us work even harder and go even faster in an effort to over compensate- this will not work. In a lot of cases it will compound the situation. We here would like to offer up an alternative gentler approach to getting you back up and at ’em.

Stop everything. Give yourself permission to be still. This is not the time for action it is a time for inaction and gentle reflection. In stillness you are giving yourself permission to become receptive, physically at peace and self nurture. You will then be able to look at your current situation with non judgmental non harassed eyes, shed what no longer serves you and equally you will become increasingly aware of what does bring you peace and joy and reconnect. By burying feelings which make us feel sad and anguished we are not helping our selves at all. These feelings are a learning curve, a chance for us to acknowledge areas where we need to get truly intimate with ourselves and hold space.

The act of stillness is one in which we could devote a whole post to but for now suffice to say it is the human condition translation of pressing pause. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is by reconnecting with our senses and for when you need to be still in a pinch and bring yourself back to the present concentrate on what at that moment you can see, hear, feel, smell and taste. By doing this you are making yourself be present and not allowing your mind to wander back to the thoughts that have been preoccupying and disturbing you. Focusing upon your breathing is also excellent at this time and you may well notice that you are not breathing out for half as long as you are breathing in. If this is the case, you are being shown that you are not releasing as much as you are taking in. Its time to start letting go a wee bit. Important to note here that breathe focus is not the only route to stillness and for many it can be a triggering episode. There are many cues you can use such as staring out at a window, a spot on the floor, the backs of your eyelids etc experiment and see what works best for YOU.

What we are needing is a two step process, release/surrender followed by receiving and gratitude. It kind of has to be performed in this order as a cathartic purge and cleanse will put you back in to neutral before progressing back and further into a state of happiness and co creation. The first part of this process will be discussed here today and later on in the week we will look more in depth at how we can then move on to receivership and gratitude.


Below you will find a few suggestions, try them all or just one if you like, depending upon your situation. The aim is to vent and air your grievance in a safe space. You are safe remember and you need to give yourself permission to release the pent up negativity inside of yourself.

-Visualisation. It is a sad fact that we will never receive the apologies we feel we should and need in order to move out of a situation. We all by now know the adage of holding a grudge being akin to drinking poison and expecting the object of our frustrations to suffer from this act. It is an adage for a reason- it is true. Resentment is toxic and the act of forgiveness is one in which we benefit ourselves. Visualising yourself actively forgiving somebody will begin the release process and help you move on. You may well need to do this repeatedly and that is fine. You may also need to forgive yourself. Time and again we do something and think why did I do that- AGAIN. Awareness of our mistakes is awareness itself so don?t be hard on yourself as you are able now to discern what is right for you and what is not. See your mistake as proving the exception to the rule and probing your new role. This path isn’t linear. I don’t think any life course is. What you may well find is that we come round to the same points over again each time with a fresh understanding and deeper insight.

-Bed punching. Yes bed punching. Nobody on this planet should be carrying around anger fear hurt or resentment. Not only will it cloud your vision, stunt your growth and make you miserable but in time it will also make you physically ill. Manually releasing the pent up tension into an inanimate object will teach your body to let go of these feelings and transmute them as energy back into the universe. For many this act may be in contrition to anything they have been taught about physical obedience and good behaviour. Trust me you are only doing the right thing by releasing an energy or vibration which is causing you harm. You do not need to carry this around with you. Great anger release therapy!

Journaling and burning. Some of us (read: Bellatrix) find it best to simply write down the way we feel and why. We can sometimes be more expressive when writing and find that we think through a situation a lot more. I would suggest writing everything down and again, no shame here. It really is not in your best interest to hold back as you are keeping in everything you want to let out. Write until it exhausts you if you need to. Once you are done burn it. Let it go and as with the other two processes allow that energy to be transmuted and sent back up to the universe.

Meditation. When we are overcome with negativity it is very very hard to be still and present with ourselves. This is however the only way as distractions will never take away the cause but will divert you from rectifying it. Sitting very still in a semi lotus position, hands resting gently on your knees, take deep breathes into your stomach. As you imagine your feet and sacral area growing roots down into mother Earth so too imagine the energy layers around you opening up like a lotus flower. Set the intention of only interacting with energy for your highest good and allow your energetic petals to gently blow in the breeze. Now imagine releasing the pent up energy. There may be some areas which are hard to open up, the throat and heart could prove difficult. If this is the case be gentle and loving to yourself, coax out those difficult emotions and feel them to release them.

In Conclusion

As should be apparent here, the aim of the game is to get you to release any pent up negativity you are keeping stored and allow its transmutation. This can only be done once you are standing still and giving your situation the full attention it deserves, and when we say release we truly mean release. When letting go of energy and thoughts which do not serve you well restraint is not order of the day. If you keep your emotions in you will be keeping that energy in/blocked. You really will get out of this process what you put in to it so please give it your all, don’t be so attached to the energy around you which is depleting and to your detriment. This is a phase and this too shall pass- on the proviso that you allow it and are ready to grow some more.
